Procter & Gamble will open a new distribution center near Shippensburg, creating nearly 1,000 new jobs.

The company was identified Thursday as the mystery tenant seeking to build a massive distribution center on Olde Scotland Road, Southampton Township (Franklin County).

Construction is expected to be finished by next summer. Once fully operational, the facility is expected to employ four to six Procter & Gamble employees and 900 to 1,000 contractors.

Procter & Gamble spokesman Jeff LeRoy said a contractor has not been chosen yet, so it is too early to say when hiring will start.

Dollar General could start recruiting employees for its new distribution center at Berks Park 78 in Bethel Township in late August or September, a Berks official said Wednesday.

The Goodlettsville, Tenn., company is building a state-of-the-art distribution facility off Interstate 78 and will be looking to fill more than 500 jobs in the region.

Thomas C. McKeon, executive director of the Berks County Industrial Development Authority, said he has been in touch with a Dollar General human resources official who said the recruitment process would begin soon.

“He wouldn’t say it was official, and everything is fluid,” McKeon said. “But he said it’s probably late August or September, but that could change.”
